LOFAR-BG Progress Update: 2023–2024

This article is part of a series in which we highlight the key milestones in the development of LOFAR-BG.

From planning to reality: infrastructure construction begins

During 2023 and 2024, LOFAR-BG made a decisive transition from planning to actual infrastructure construction. For the first time, the project began to take physical form on site, marking an important milestone for the entire initiative.
Construction works were carried out to establish electrical and optical connectivity between NAO Rozhen and the future station site. Over 700 meters of cable routes were installed, communication shafts were built, and the groundwork for high-speed data transfer was established. This is critical, as LOFAR generates large volumes of data that must be transmitted and processed efficiently.
At the same time, initial leveling of the terrain was completed—an engineering process requiring high precision to ensure proper antenna placement. Additional measurements were conducted to monitor soil stability, supporting future fine adjustments before installation.

At NAO Rozhen, supporting infrastructure was also developed, including a modern server room, communication systems, and operational workspaces. Reliable power supply systems and modern networking solutions were implemented to ensure the station’s future stability and performance.
With these developments, LOFAR-BG now has a functional operational base, bringing the project significantly closer to full deployment.
